About the Artist Sylvain Dubrunfaut

The French artist Sylvain Dubrunfaut (b. 1979) lives and works in Lille. His works are usually based on his own photographs and videos. Dubrunfaut photographs and films the people around him and searches through this material for that one decisive moment, which he then paints. In the transition from the camera image to the painting, mere resemblance dissolves: the image becomes less a representation and more a condensed, painterly interpretation of the captured moment. The focus is on the play of light, which particularly highlights his subjects, often young people. Dubrunfaut exhibits regularly in France and Belgium. His works are included in public collections in northern France, among others.
